South Slope Coffee has balanced this cup with lots of sweetness and a great body. The flavors of cherry red grape, pear, and cantaloupe linger in the mouth with an incredibly nice aftertaste.
Gold Mountain Coffee growers help manage El Cipres and organize the importation and sale for Yader and Karen, including many other farmers in the area. All the offerings from Gold Mountain Coffee are at the utmost level of sustainability; socially and environmentally. They are also of the utmost quality you can receive anywhere in the world. We are very proud to carry these coffees and be part of such a great mission to helping farmers receive enough money to grow as a business and personally.
The farm of Yader and Karen (El Cipres) is located in one of the prime coffee cultivating regions of Jinotega in a unique microclimate. They live with their kids (Jesús and Elvin) at such a high altitude that their farm’s coffee is harvested two months after the rest of the country’s coffee due to the colder climate. Because of temperature, their beans have a slower maturity rate, allowing them to collect more nutrients. The result is denser, sweeter beans and more complex cupping notes.
Yader and Karen used funds from this past harvest to buy a truck, but after becoming a truck owner they decided to sell it and instead invest in more horses to help carry their coffee off their very steep and hard-to-reach mountainside. They use loans from GMCG to fertilize and maintain healthy coffee trees. Yader and Karen receive more than certifying organizations pay, receive loans, free transport, technical support, quality premiums, and other benefits through working with GMCG. Gold Mountain Coffee Growers works with Yader and Karen to ensure only the reddest coffee cherries are picked, that fermentation levels are optimal, that washing and drying are thorough, and that imperfections are selected out on raised beds. Results shine through in cuppings.
Gold Mountain Coffee Growers is a social enterprise that, in addition to its own farm (Finca Idealista), works directly with coffee producers in Nicaragua, including Yader and Karen, to connect them with roasters abroad. GMCG is on the ground, all the time, teaming up with producers willing to take the steps necessary (and whose altitude and soil conditions allow them) to produce high-cupping specialty coffee. We literally stand on every partner farm during picking to ensure ripeness with refractometers and ripeness bracelets. GMCG also carries out sustainable development projects in communities, such as free computing classes for girls from coffee communities, medical assistance, microcredit, running water in schools, and educational supplies.
